Make Orphanage Buffer for Care-Leavers

보육원은 아이들의 집이다. 잠을 자고 깨며 학교가 끝나면 돌아오는 집이다. 하지만 그동안 대한민국의 보육원은 수많은 사회의 트라우마를 만들어냈다. 보육원은 아이들을 보호하기 위해 폐쇄적이고 사회로부터 격리되었다. 보육원을 둘러싼 높은 담장 안에서 아이들은 폭력과 학대를 당해왔다. 그렇게 성인이 된 아이들은 자유가 되는 듯 싶지만, 당장 눈앞에 닥친 현실적인 삶의 문제 앞에서 무기력하다. 트라우마를 지닌 채 과거를 외면하고 당장 내일 잘 곳을 걱정해야 한다. 자립준비청년들은 여전히 보육원으로부터 벗어나지 못하고 경계선에 서 있다.

본 프로젝트에 앞서 보육원과 지역사회의 “물리적 단절”과 한순간에 뛰어넘어야 하는 보육원과 사회의 “보이지 않는 경계선”은 같은 문제를 공유한다고 보았다. 그리고 그 경계선에는 자립준비청년이 위태롭게 놓여있다. 결국 청년들이 물리적 환경과 삶의 방식에서의 큰 변화 앞에서 쉽사리 나아가지 못하는 것은 현재 보육원의 형태와 시스템에서 이유를 찾을 수 있었다.

따라서 “Make Orphanage Buffer for Care-Leavers”에서는 보육원과 지역사회 사이의 물리적인, 비-물리적인 완충으로써 “Buffer”가 필요함을 제안한다. 경계를 확장해 Buffer를 만들면서 자립준비청년들과 그들의 공간에 역할을 부여하고, Buffer의 건축적인 제스처와 시스템에 대해서도 고민한다.

A Orphanage is a home for children. It is a home where they sleep and wake up and return home after school. However, Korean orphanages have created numerous social trauma. They have been closed and isolated from society to protect children. Inside the high wall surrounding the buiilding, children have been subjected to violence and abuse. Children who have become adults seem like free, but they are helpless in the face of realistic life problems that are ahead of them. They must turn a blind eye to the past with trauma and worry about where they will sleep tomorrow. Young people who are preparing for self-reliance, Care-Leavers, are still at the boundary line without getting out of the high wall.

Prior to this project, the Physical disconnection, between the orphanage and local community, and the Invisible boundary, between the nursery and society, which must be crossed in an instant, were considered to share the same problem. And at that boundary, Care-leavers are precariously placed. In the end, the reason why young people cannot easily move forward in front of major changes in their physical environment and way of life was found in the current form and system of orphanages.

Therefore, “Make Orphanage Buffer for Care-Leavers” suggests that “Buffer” is needed as a physical and non-physical buffer between orphanage and communities. By expanding the boundaries to create buffers, we give roles to care-leavers preparing for self-reliance and their spaces, and we also think about the architectural gestures and systems of buffers.
